Our current collaboration began nearly five months ago and is entitled "Creativity Sings." Kris, an established Studio Artist working in Batik, reached out to her friends Chris and Jack to embark upon a shared journey of creative exploration using their chosen mediums in a collective piece. Discussions ensued and many meetings of simple conversation, good wine, and planning began. There are many unknowns in creative collaboration. Do styles and mediums complement or contradict? Is contradiction a negative or a positive? What should be the subject matter? How will we document our journey? What creative liberties will we have to “suspend” to achieve true collaboration? The questions were endless and, at times, even ominous. Nevertheless, the three persevered and prevailed in the conversations, growing ever closer to each other, and building incredible excitement and anticipation of
the journey of discovery and the actual project.
With the subject of a central Nebraska Platte River scene arrived upon, the group began to ask each other about the emotion and “story” of the piece. All three felt very strongly that the piece should tell a story of life. With Batik setting the stage with river, cottonwood, sky and fields, a meticulously compiled print of a fallen cottonwood, and animal characters to become players on the stage, it became evident that the drama that would unfold through these distinct mediums would not be unlike one of the great stage plays or librettos.
As the work unfolds, we have discovered that the piece not only tells the special story of Platte River theatre, but it also tells the story of us, three friends on a journey of discovery that is both personal and join, and a story of hope for all of us.

Our second project is now finished, Beauty of Grace. It is a magnificent large scale piece 45 x 70 and will be exhibited beginning March 5th, 2021 at Studio K Gallery in Grand Island Nebraska. This piece is unlike the first, Creativity Sings. While the steps remained nearly the same, we approached it a little out of sequence.
Kris had already started a piece and had the composition well in mind. We ended up striking the print on top of an area that was already waxed and dyed. We really struggled getting the print right and had four failed tests before we simply had to strike it on the piece. It turned out amazing!
The piece is extraordinary in many ways, artistically, technically, visually, compositionally...but what strikes all of us about this piece is how it has brought us together closer. The emotion that all of us have infused in this piece, and in turn, it infuses us with the same, our personal and collective struggles and our willingness to find grace in it all. We hope that you will come to experience this amazing piece in person. It is powerful.
Untethered is our third large scale piece 45 x 70. It represents much about our creative journey and it produces many questions. Why the Heron? Who is flying the kite? The flowing lines of the subject material make this a visually stunning piece. The sentiment behind the piece Untethered is both personal and incomplete for the three of us. We are left flying, untethered on this journey of discovery. We hope that people who engage with this piece will find their own story in its song.
